A holiday camp built for discovery, resilience and adventure

Across two weeks this June and July, Wildlings is bringing its full adventure camp programme to Batu Batu, a private eco-island resort on Pulau Tengah in Malaysia's Sultan Iskandar Marine Park.
Rooted in the Wildlings forest school ethos, the programme gives children the freedom to explore, create and challenge themselves, guided by the extraordinary island around them and our fabulous staff. Through water-based adventures, forest exploration, island challenges and hands-on creative experiences, children engage wholeheartedly.
What we learn with pleasure, we never forget. - Alfred Mercer
What to Expect
A new adventure every day with seven daily themes: Each day stands on its own, so children can join anytime without missing out, and based on the following principles:
Fun first. Always. Every session is built around children, adventure and challenge, with confidence, creativity and capability growing through doing.
Three sessions, with family time in between. Morning (9:30 to 12:00), afternoon (2:30 to 5:00), evening (7:00 to 8:30). The rest of the day is free for lunch, the pool, the beach, and family.
The island is the playground. Pulau Tengah's seagrass and coral reefs, forest trails, mangroves, gardens and turtle hatchery shape every session.
A community from day one. Each morning starts with icebreakers, so every child feels included. By day two, they have already found each other beyond the sessions.
Fully flexible. Join for a day, a few days, or the full week. Every day is a complete experience (but advance booking guarantees your spot).
Relaxed evenings parents can join. Parents are welcome on ghost crab walks, stargazing, UV night walks, campfires and nature documentaries (subject to maximum group sizes).
One coach to ten children. A 1:10 ratio, capped at 20 children per group, so every child gets the attention and support they need.

A peek at the week ahead
The 7-day programme runs Monday to Sunday and repeats once across the fortnight. Children can drop in any day.

Day 1, Ocean Explorers. They begin where the island begins, in the sea, discovering the life beneath the surface. Bodyboarding over seagrass meadows, intertidal treasure hunts, beach games. Afternoon turtle conservation experience: interactive talk, nest tracking, hatchery visit and turtle art. Evening ghost crab observation walk and campfire.
Day 2, Marine Biologist for a Day. A day with the people protecting the ocean. Meet a Tengah Island Conservation marine biologist, watch reef footage from baited underwater cameras (BRUVS), guided mangrove walk and tree planting. Afternoon beach cleanup with data collection becomes a large-scale collaborative artwork. Evening UV night walk for fluorescent scorpions, millipedes and nocturnal wildlife.
Day 3, Castaway. A high-energy day of survival, teamwork and hands-on challenge. Knot tying, shelter building (with a hose-down test), supervised fire striking. Afternoon lashing skills, raft building and raft races in the shallows. Evening stargazing by the sandbar.
Day 4, Expedition. A wide-ranging adventure across the whole island. Children get a compass and a hand-drawn map and navigate between named beaches, solving challenges at each waypoint to win the race. In the afternoon, they design and build their own raft from bamboo, lashings and recycled buoyancy, then race them in the shallows. The day finishes with closing awards and stories around the campfire.
Day 5, Island Heritage. A journey beyond the island, connecting with local culture and history. Boat excursion to neighbouring Pulau Besar for traditional Zapin dance, ketupat weaving, heritage games and local food. Afternoon beach foraging, then driftwood and sea glass sculpture using proper tools. Evening ghost crab walk.
Day 6, Wild Skills. Learning to see the island as a resource. Forest trail hike with nature bingo, garden foraging, coconut tree climbing with full safety gear, palm weaving, and an Island SOS smoke signal challenge. Evening UV night walk on a different route.
Day 7, Grow & Cook. From soil to plate. The Vietnamese Boat People once lived on this island. Children hear the story, forage in the garden, and cook Vietnamese-inspired food together. Afternoon composting, mini-beast discovery, planting in the children's garden, and a take-home bottle planter. Evening stargazing or ghost crab walk.
Every evening sits alongside campfire marshmallows and a nature documentary at the Children's Clubhouse. The team is on call for turtle nesting throughout.

About Batu Batu

Set on the pristine private island of Pulau Tengah, Batu Batu is more than a resort. It is a 22-villa eco-island retreat where nature, community and purpose come together.
The island sits inside Malaysia's Sultan Iskandar Marine Park, a designated marine protected area off Mersing in Johor. Eight white-sand beaches. Coral reefs and seagrass meadows in the shallows. Juvenile reef sharks gliding through the lagoon. Resident green and hawksbill turtles nesting on the beaches. Rich birdlife in the canopy. The Tengah Island Conservation Centre on site protects all of it, and your children will meet the marine biologists who run it.
Batu Batu was built plank by plank by the family who own it, with sustainability and the local environment at the heart of every decision. Staying there directly supports a locally-owned business committed to the island, the community and the unique culture of the region.
Getting there from Singapore is simple. A 2.5 to 3-hour drive or coach to Mersing Jetty in Johor, then a 20 to 30-minute private speedboat to the island. No airports and expensive flights required.
