School Excursions in Singapore: Why Outdoor Learning Works

Updated: 4 days ago

Most school excursions in Singapore follow the same formula. Bus to a museum, follow a guide, fill in a worksheet, bus home. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you are looking for something more immersive and fun, something where students actually get hands-on, solve real problems and build genuine confidence, outdoor learning is worth considering.

At Wildlings, we run outdoor school excursions for early-years, primary and early-secondary schools across Singapore. Our programmes are built on Forest School principles, delivered by qualified outdoor educators at our exclusive nature spaces in Dempsey and West Coast Park as well as selected locations around Singapore (Pulau Ubin, East Coast Park, Pasir Ris Park Changi Beach and so on). Here is what that looks like in practice, and why schools keep coming back.

What Makes an Outdoor School Excursion Different?

The biggest difference is agency. In a typical school field trip, students observe. In an outdoor learning journey, they do. They navigate, build, problem-solve, negotiate with each other, manage risk, and make decisions with real consequences. A shelter that falls down in the rain teaches more about engineering than a textbook diagram ever will.

This is not just our opinion. Research* consistently shows that outdoor experiential learning improves retention, engagement and social-emotional development. Students who learn outside develop stronger problem-solving skills, better self-regulation and higher levels of resilience. For schools in Singapore, where academic pressure is high and outdoor time is limited, this matters.

What Does a Wildlings School Excursion Look Like?

Our school excursions run from 90 minutes to three-day two-night, Singapore base residential camps, depending on what you need. We have a brochure, but also design bespoke programmes for students aged 18months to 13 years, and we can accommodate groups of various sizes, up to around 120 per visit.

Every excursion is designed around clear learning outcomes. That might be teamwork and communication through shelter building, biodiversity through guided habitat exploration, or leadership through navigation challenges. We work with teachers before the visit to align activities with curriculum goals, whether that is science, character education, physical education or cross-curricular learning.

Why Forest School Principles Matter for School Excursions

Forest School is not just playing in the jungle. It is a structured educational approach where the environment is carefully prepared, children lead their own learning, and risk is managed rather than eliminated. This means students are challenged at the right level. They experience genuine achievement, not just participation.

For a school excursion, this translates into programmes that feel adventurous and exciting while being carefully risk-assessed and educationally rigorous. Our staff are trained outdoor educators with child safeguarding qualifications, and we maintain a strong safety record across thousands of sessions.

Who Are Outdoor School Excursions For?

We work with local and international schools across Singapore offering excursions for a few hours or a whole day, to multi-day, Singapore-based residentials. Schools can camp overnight at our premises in Dempsey and we offer Forest School as an in-curriculum service or our light-touch Nature Explorers Club as a CCA.

We have designed excursions for classes of 10 to cohorts of over 200. Teachers tell us their students talk about the experience for weeks afterwards. That is the difference between a day out and a genuine learning journey adventure in the great outdoors.

About Claire

Claire is the Founder and CEO of Wildlings, an environmental scientist by training and an environmental sustainability consultant and educator by trade (aside from being a busy mum to two sometimes wild children). Claire enjoyed a very outdoorsy childhood collecting acorns, making daisy chains and sifting dirt to get the perfect pile. Once upon a time Claire was an enthusiastic ultimate frisbee player and before Wildlings taught pre-school sports classes. Claire is on a mission to help City kids experience a wilder childhood through the Forest School approach to learning and founded Wildlings in 2019 offering outdoor activities for children and families in Singapore to do this.
